8-6 Early Morning on the Bainbridge Ferry - My friend Doug and I met at 5:30am so we could hop the ferry and head out to the Olympic Peninsula to photograph wildflowers. I rented the Nikon 200 F4 micro for the occasion so was putting it to good use on the ferry. We had more luck on the ferry with the light. Unfortunately we chose the warmest, sunniest day of the year to head up to Hurricane Ridge. We found lots of wildflowers but the lighting for the most part was harsh and a little windy. We made the best of it. ANother challenge was that our car was swarmed by a bunch of flies and bees when we were at the higher altitude so that we really did not want to get out. We enjoyed each other's company and did some scouting and got a few interesting images.

8/5 Lily - My favorite lily that blooms in my garden. It usually blooms close to my BD.
Since a lot of people have asked. I absolutely love my Nikon D800E. For example this image is a crop but it still has enough pixels to make a good size print. This image is a single exposure and I was able to get a lot of dynamic range as well.8/4/12- On the Road to Prineville - I found this wonderful old truck and gas tank while I was heading east to Prineville, Oregon. There were some other old time goodies as well. Thanks for all the comments on my rainbow image.

8-3 This is the entire rainbow that I captured that morning. It is nine image panorama that was made from 5 exposures for each of the frames. The files are very large since they come from my D800e so my computer had to chug away. I did the HDR conversion before doing the stitching. I then had to downsize the image to be able to upload it to Smugmug but this jpeg is still 60.8 MB.

7-30-12 Purple Martin Leaving Nest Box at Bay Ocean, Oregon. There is a small colony with around a dozen boxes off the small spit at Bay Ocean in Tillamook Bay. I got a chance to photograph them for a while on Saturday. This was taken with a 2x doubler on a 500 F4 lens and a D7000 (1.5 crop factor) for an effective focal length of 1500. I also did a little cropping of the photo. It was tricky shooting at such high magnification with the wind (although it was not really blowing by ocean standatds).

7-28-12 Shipwreck at Bay City, Oregon - this boat is visible from the Bay City Pier behind the Pacific Oyster Company. It can be seen at lower tides of Tilllamook Bay. I searched the internet to see if it had a name but came up empty. I think I will try to photograph all the shipwrecks in Oregon. I now have two. Some are only seen at very specific times of the year like the one in North Bend. I will have to do the research and get a schedule together but it will be a fun project.

To the south is a beautiful view of the Gorge. In April the fields here are ablaze with blue lupines and balsalm root. I missed the show this year but this time had the treat of calm. It was probably the least windy visit I have ever made to this wonderful place.

7-20-12 Punch Bowl Falls - Eagle Creek Wilderness Area, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
This was a beautiful falls but required balancing on flat rocks in a stream to be able to see it after hiking 2 miles on a trail that had some precarious ledges. Several days ago I posted an image of Metlako Falls which is on the same trail about .5 mile back from this fall. There are several more waterfalls in thiis wilderness area although I only saw the first two. Thanks for all the comments on the close up and detailed version that I posted yesterday. It continues to be fun to share this mini series.

7-18-12 Details of the Abandoned House near Dufur, Oregon. This is a closeup perspective with more detail of the abandoned house which I posted yesterday. I continue to have fun working on many different perspectives of this wonderful find. Thanks for all of yesterday's comments.
A few answers to yesterday's questions. I was an attendee at the Gorge_Painted Hill Workshop lead by Darrel Gulin and Jean Carter. It was a great workshop. This is the fourth one I have attended and will be going to another one in September to Bandon, Oregon. Additionally, I got to shoot my new camera on the workshop the Nikon D800E which has fabulous image quality. BTW I never was able to get inside.DufurGorge_PaintedHills_Workshop_2012Ilene SamowitzOregon20120615IS04097HDR

This shows the entirety of the house with the vibrant countryside. This type of find fascinates me with all the possibilities for photographing and telling its story.

7-10-12 Barview Evening, I was very lucky with the light and weather for the most part during my last trip to the Oregon coast. Watched the sunset from the jetty overlooking the ocean. I always try to remember to turn around and look behind. This was the scene and light behind me. Looking at the start of Tillamook Bay from the inlet at Barview jetty. 7-7-12 Pastel Sunset from Cape Lookout Across to Three Arches, Cape Lookout, Oregon Coast
Last night was beautiful...little wind...red ball of fire and pastel colors across the landscape. We traveled down to Newport and got to see four whale blows, photographed the murre colony at Yaquina Head, an oystercatcher, the Newport Bridge, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and a few other things. There was a nest of peregrine falcons at the Interpretive Center but they just fledged so we were treated to an aerial display put on by three of the babies. Another glorious day at the coast.
